Company of Heroes 2 in Review: Best Real-Time Strategy in the Second World War
Company of Heroes 2 in the test: The successor of the award-winning real-time strategy hit is finally here! We tell you what has happened to your predecessor, how interesting the campaign on the Eastern Front is, and of course, for whom the purchase is worthwhile.
If you are looking for a nice, crisp and tactically challenging real-time strategy game with an elaborately staged campaign after Starcraft 2: Heart of Swarm, you should take a closer look at Company of Heroes 2. The new game of Relic (Homeworld, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War series) scores with the most detailed visual appearance in the genre, pretty intersections, great mission design and countless tactics. Also, the scenario around the Second World War acts after a few years of transmission pause from the west or east front fresh. Of course, because of its ambitious dimensions, the game has one or the other weakness, which we will also discuss in our test. The multiplayer mode and the German version, we, unfortunately, have to leave outside,
That’s what it’s all about: The Company of Heroes 2 campaign puts us in the role of Lev Abramovich Isakovich. The smart ex-lieutenant of the Red Army is held in a gulag in Siberia and tells his war experiences seven years after the German capitulation. In the flashbacks almost no notorious battle on the east front is omitted, both Stalingrad, Kursk and the assault of Berlin are on board. As is the case with a showcase hero, Isakovich defies the leadership of the Soviets, which despises man’s life, and therefore has to accept some degradation and forced displacement within the 14 missions.
Good: Missions design
Company of Heroes 2 scores with a few exceptions with an exemplary mission design. In the first missions in Stalingrad and Moscow, beginners are not overwhelmed, but trainmen are also taught new tactics – such as the construction of fireplaces, to avoid the loss of troops by snow storms. After the third order, the difficulty increases steadily, but is not impossible on the last cards. Moreover, no other mission is the same. In the cold winter of 1942, for example, we had to sabotage the supply lines of the Wehrmacht with a small group of sniper rifles, while carefully dealing with the troops at our disposal. In Schlisselburg, on the other hand, a massive mass battle is staged, in which we employ countless soldiers and numerous tanks, to free the besieged city. As usual since Command & Conquer, there is also a command in the campaign. Fortunately, the order with the Polish partisans, despite the late game phase, is rather easy and does not become an unnecessary obstacle for one or other player.
Within the campaign, Company of Heroes 2 shows how beautiful it looks with the new Essence 3.0 graphics engine and its DX11 effects. Above all, the vehicles are elaborately worked out and almost as if they were made for a modern ego-shooter. It is also nice that you can rotate the camera with the ALT button at any time in the appropriate perspective and so be close to the action if an armored cannon defends against attacking tanks.
A fog of war has been going on since Warcraft 2 and would be in real-time strategy games. Company of Heroes 2 goes a step further and shows you only what your units can see. If snipers hide behind or in a building, they remain invisible to you. The same applies to vehicles and foot soldiers who use smoke grenades.
