Pixlr-O-Matic’s creators also come with Pixlr, and the name is program: this application for editing photos is designed to make pictures in a short time appealing and then share them on social networks. So you do not need to be a professional to get good results with the image processing app. There are many effects, cosmetic processing (removal of red eyes, lightening and smoothing) is also possible and for the social connection is also provided. For frequently used settings, buttons can be created for quick availability. A collage mode helps you to combine multiple images into one. For 2.21 euro you can turn the app ad-free – like you Pixlr, this in-app purchase is actually a no-brainer.
Google’s own image processing app is called Snapseed and it has it all: it is free and offers all sorts of filters and optimization options. Whether you’re cutting, applying filters, or correcting colors, Snapseed has a powerful image processing capability. You can adjust the coloring or, for example, create a focus effect, but not the natural bokeh of a DSLR, but images can greatly enhance.
Snapseed saves the images in a separate folder so that the original is not squeezed. With apps such as Dropbox or Google Photos, you can then sync the snapseed results.
Adobe: Photoshop Fix and Photoshop Express
Photoshop is the synonym for image processing for many people. After the first touchscreen version of Photoshop was removed from the Play Store, Adobe started to launch its own app offensive. For image processing, there are two apps that deliver good results: Photoshop Express and Photoshop Fix. Photoshop Fix is specialized in working with photos and you can use all of the essential features of Photoshop to get the most out of your photos: Fits proportions with the liquefying tool, retouches image errors or adjusts details with controls for dynamics and clarity at. Photoshop Express, on the other hand, has a larger range of functions and can also deal with RAW formats that are more likely to come from the DSLR camera area.
Another interesting app now belongs to Adobe and is called Aviary. Aviary provides you with a variety of effects and helps you to quickly generate a meme from a picture of you.
SKWRT focuses on correcting the perspective of a photo. You are uploading a photo, and you can correct it at will. The options available for this are numerous and allow you to easily correct snapping lines. Although SKWRT can not produce miracles, your photos look much more straight after processing. SKWRT costs 1.29 euros, but it is good for the price.
Vignette is not a pure image processing application, but a further hybrid and also as a stand-alone camera application with digital zoom, time-lapse and self-timer. The focus of the app is on vintage effects and camera styles: you can make your pictures look as if they were shot, for example, with a Lomo, Diana, Holga, or Polaroid. There is also double exposure and a photo automaton mode.
The image processing with vignette is however limited to the camera effects, a pruning and rotation is not possible. Vignette is paid, but currently costs only 1.29 euros instead of the actual price of 3.29 euros. In contrast to many other applications, the full range of functions is also available without data connection (as it should be), the images remain on the smartphone – unless you share them somewhere.
Image processing apps: The best with cloud connectivity
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
More and more camera apps dominate the output of raw data. This means that sensor data from a snapshot can be stored on the internal memory without postprocessing. This post-processing then takes place in an app like Adobe Lightroom.
Lightroom has been available for Android for quite some time, but it is only now that it is developing its full strength. Finally, you can take full advantage of the photo app without an account in the Adobe Creative Cloud. Only the synchronization of your photos via the Adobe services requires an account as well as a valid subscription.
When you start the image processing app, you will not see any pictures. So the first step must be to add the previous Galeriebilder to Lightroom. These are also available in the Lightroom collection.
The possibilities for manual or preset-based post-processing are numerous. Remarkable is, of course, support for raw data images. Only the formats DNG and RW2 are used here. You can use any editing steps that are available on the desktop. Thanks to the integrated camera, you can also integrate mobile photography into your Lightroom workflow. Images syncs the app with the Adobe Cloud.
Google Photos is an all-in-one solution: you can use the app to save the images to the cloud to free up space on your smartphone and you can edit the pictures, of course. For the latter you have several filters, which you can use for the optimization. Contrasts, saturation or other parameters can be adjusted so quickly. Disadvantage: You save the corrections directly in Google Photos, the original is overwritten, which is not always desired.
All in all, the sorting functions of Google Photos convince. The app sorts the app by people, places and important features. This way certain holiday pictures or Selfie portraits can be found faster without having to browse through the entire picture gallery. Added to this is the unlimited photo storage in the Google Cloud, which is available for photos with a resolution of up to 16 megapixels.
Candy Camera offers many filters and even stickers to decorate your photos. The app is completely free and the advertising is really limited. However, where there are hardly any limits, the possibilities are, among other things, to remove skin imperfections or to flatten areas in the image. In addition to standard filters, Selfie filters supplement the already large range. Cool are especially the effects, so even photos in the office or under cloudy sky like under the sun. Hundreds of stickers round off the whole thing and make for a bit more fun. You should try the app in any case.
Facetune is an image editing app that helps you make your selfsies and other images more beautiful. Whether facial pimples, skin folds or dark circles under the eyes: numerous processing possibilities are offered by the facetune app. Even with not so perfect smile or discolored teeth may be retouched. If you want to give a new look to the picture motifs, you can also change the eye color, sprout hair on bald spots on the head, or even adjust cheek and jaw bones. Facetune also offers numerous filters, so you can improve your photos with special effects.
Cymera – Camera & Photocollagen
Cymera is especially designed for portraits, although all photos can be edited with it. Images can be taken with the smartphone camera or selected from the gallery. The image processing app offers seven different lenses – especially from the retro sector – and four shooting modes during photography. More than twenty filters, decorative effects, portrait features and realistic makeup effects are available. Images can be shared among other things via Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr directly from the application.Cymera is free, but not free of advertising: At the bottom of the screen, a small, tolerable banner is shown from time to time.
With Prisma, there are no great options for manual shooting, image corrections or the like. The app has set its sights on making photos of real art. For this, there are numerous filters that can be applied to existing or directly recorded images in the app.PLEASANT: The intensity of the filter can be continuously adjusted from 0 to 100% by means of a slider, which strongly influences the look of an image. Prisma is available as a free app for all Android devices from version 4.1 onwards.
Photo Lab Pro has a great range of features, but in this overview, it has its filters: similar to the App Prisma, you can create paintings from your photos. But Photolab Pro goes a lot further: It creates different montages, which give the pictures a whole new note. It’s easy to use, so you can get results in just a few steps. Instead of perfect details and colors, you will get a whole new motif here. The free version works slower, builds a watermark and displays advertisements.
Tiny Planet and Small Planet
With an app you can turn your panorama pictures into a so-called Tiny Planet image. We recommend you two apps: the first is Tiny Planet FX. The application is unfortunately not free, but offers many options to adjust the effect accordingly. The second app is called Small Planet and is available free of charge in the Play Store. The apps require a little training time. After that the user can make spectacular pictures.
Our overview shows: If you are not satisfied with a smartphone photo, there are a whole series of apps that help you to tickle fine details. You can retouch the photos – the various Adobe apps have the best tools here. Pixlr or Google Photos will allow you to get quick montages and collages.
In the test of the various apps, the Adobe apps appeared mainly for detailed work on images, playful effects were rather implemented in other apps well. Photolab requires little prior knowledge and conjures up fast results, while the small-planet effect makes for every social post for astonishing reactions.
