With YouTube, there is already a new record holder in most of the calls for a video within a month.
It’s only a month since the song »See you again« by Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth has pushed YouTube’s long-running “gangnam style” from Psy to the throne of the most watched video . »Gangnam Style« had won the first place in November 2011 by Justin Bieber and in December 2012 was even the first video with more than one billion views. Since July 2017, however, the record “See you again” belonged , which at this point was just under three billion.
Over three billion calls in seven months
But even this enormous number was not enough to be replaced within a few weeks. The new leader is the summer hit “Despacito“ by the two musicians Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee from Puerto Rico. Currently, the video on YouTube has more than 3.055 billion views .
The song was released on YouTube on January 12, 2017 , with an average of 436 million views per month , or 14 million daily . This makes the record all the more impressive, because Gangnam Style took much longer for “only” a billion downloads and “See You Again” had been on YouTube for more than two years before the song could take the lead.
Worldwide successful in the charts
However, “Despacito” is currently a big hit worldwide. In Germany, the song can hardly be pushed out of the top seats in the charts, and even in the USA the song has been in the first place of the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks . Only Ed Sheeran was just as successful with “Shape of You” in the USA this year – and “Despacito” could also claim this record this week.
